Chambersburg, PA - An important part of police work comes not just from the officers themselves but also the K-9s that work with them. Protection4paws, an organization that seeks to help fulfill the needs of these K-9s, will host the inaugural "Cruzin For K9's" event, to raise money for the four-legged officers, on Saturday May 20, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
"Protection4paws is an organization that raises money to help our furry K-9 officers receive items that they need to protect them so they can go home at the end of their shift," said Tina Richardson, founder of Protection4paws. "It's run strictly by volunteers that have a passion to protect those who protect us."
The event begins with the Fallen Heroes Memorial Ride, a commemorative ride to honor both the human and K-9 officers that have been lost in the line of duty. Those who would like to participate must have either a vehicle with 4-wheel drive or a motorcycle. The convoy of vehicles will leave the M & S Harley-Davidson in Chambersburg and arrive at the Hagerstown (Md.) Speedway, where the event is being held.
Guests will also be able to meet some of the local K-9s. K-9 teams from the tristate area will perform demonstrations and will also be available for meet and greets.
"Our hope for this event is that we raise enough money to provide needed items to the K-9 officers," Richardson said. "We've used the money for things like protective vests and paid a medical bill for a dog that was injured."
Tickets for general admission are $20 per vehicle and $10 per motorcycle.
"We are hoping that this turns out to be a big success and we can make it an annual event," Richardson said.
