Pitman, NJ The Pitman Police Department has teamed up with Kelly Green Brewery to hold a fundraiser for officers making the roughly 250 miles bike ride down to Washington D.C. this spring to honor fallen officers in the annual Police Unity Tour.
The Police Unity Tour started in 1987 with 18 riders executing a four day fundraising bike ride from Florham Park to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C. Since that first tour, the annual event has grown to include nine chapters consisting of over 2,200 members nationwide who make the trip each year.
In 2016, officers nationwide raised $2.5 million benefitting the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, bringing the total over the years to more than $20 million.
Each participating officer from the Pitman police department has a personal goal of $1,800 they are trying to raise before the ride in May. To help officers reach their goals, the Pitman Police Department is inviting everyone out to Kelly Green Brewery on Sunday, Jan. 29, to support those riding in the Police Unity Tour.
"Justin [Flemming] and everyone over at Kelly Green Brewery have always been huge supporters of the police department," said Weist. "We wanted to partner up with them for this to give them some business and they wanted to thank us for our service by supporting officers."
Tickets for the fundraiser cost $25 which gives donators a 2 hour tasting of Kelly Green's craft beers, starting at 3 p.m. until 9 p.m. Local food vendors will also be there to supply some food for attendees. There will also be a 50/50 raffle, t-shirts sold and a Chinese auction to raise additional funds.
