CEDAR FALLS, IOWA — Police officers in Cedar Falls and Dave Lipiniski of Trekman Racing will host a 5K walk and run, “Officer Needs Assistance 5K,” at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 17, beginning and ending at Gateway Park for a longtime Cedar Falls reserve officer.
Reserve Officer Scott Sterrett, 48, was recently diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer. He is currently the longest serving Cedar Falls reserve officer, serving since May 2005.
Sterrett “has been a dutiful servant of the people of Cedar Falls and a dedicated runner who made it to the Boston Marathon,” officers and Trekman organizers wrote. Police want “to help Scott in appreciation for the way he has helped his community.”
Lipinski said all proceeds from entry fees, minus a discounted cost of printing T-shirts for participants, will go to Sterrett.
Families are invited to participate in the event. A barbecue meal will be served at the event’s conclusion.
Register at 5K https://www.athlinks.com/event/210111.
Donations to Sterrett also may be made at a Caring Bridge site: https://www.caringbridge.org/public/scottsterrett
Cash donations for Sterrett may be dropped off at the Cedar Falls Police Department. Make checks out to the Cedar Falls Police Protective Association, with “Sterrett benefit” in the memo line. Police also will pick up checks if donors call 273-8612.
